*September is the last in season month for Cantaloupes, Figs, Nectarines, Peaches, Corn, Eggplant, Okra and Rhubarb*
My In-Season item pick of the month: Apples!
What to look for when purchasing apples?
firm
rich in coloring
no bruising
*apples can be stored for 3-4 months with proper storage
So, who’s going apple picking in the next couple of months?
Lets try something a little different this month: Apple Marmalade!
Ingredients
- 4 cups thinly sliced tart apples, about 3 lbs
- 1 orange
- 3/4 cup water
- 2 1/2 cups sugar
- 1 packet pectin
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
Directions
- Wash, peel, quarter, and core apples. Slice thin and roughly chop and measure 4 cups (1 quart).
- Quarter the orange, remove seeds; slice very thin. Slice a few strips of rind (without the white)
- Heat water and sugar until sugar is dissolved. Add the lemon juice, rind and fruit. Boil rapidly, stirring constantly, for about 15 minutes. Add pectin and continue stirring 5 more minutes. Remove from heat; skim off foam.
- Pour immediately into hot, sterile canning jars, leaving 1/4-inch headspace. Seal. Process 5 minutes in boiling water bath.

I love apples! I’ve been waiting for fall to come to make apple butter and apple jelly but now I’m adding apple marmalade to the list!
I had never had apple marmalade, but it sounded so good – and it was. I think you’ll enjoy it.
