Original Rum Punch {Monthly Buzz}
What did you expect me to do?
It is National Rum Punch day, and I am from the islands. If I didn’t leave at a young age, I would probably have this stuff running through my veins. I was excited when I saw this because it gave me an excuse to feature (and purchase) some Jamaican rum. Win.
Since I hadn’t thought of a Monthly Buzz post yet, I thought: Double Win!
So, enjoy this drink as we exit the warm summer months. Rum will still warm you to the bones, so maybe this can take you into the fall? It’s a pretty strong drink (because that’s how the islanders like it) so please adjust to your taste and strength.
This recipe makes one drink serving, but it should double, triple, etc. with no problems.
Ingredients
- 1 ounce lime juice (about 1/2 lime)
- 1 ounce simple syrup*
- 1 ounce pineapple juice
- 1/2 ounce orange juice
- 2 ounces Jamaican rum
- 4 ounces crushed ice
- 5 drops angostura bitters
- dash nutmeg
- mint and an orange wedge, for garnish
Directions
- Mix equal parts water and granulated sugar in a saucepan until sugar dissolves. Bring to a boil and let simmer a few minutes. Stir. Cool completely before using. Stores in fridge indefinitely. On another note, if you are only making a one-time use, you can mix it until sugar dissolves, no boiling necessary.
- Mix all ingredients in a tall glass. Fill a short glass with ice. Pour drink into the short glass, sprinkle with nutmeg and garnish with orange wedge and mint sprig.
