It’s 5 O’clock Somewhere: Caribbean Sunset
Time to get our drink on! Ready to see how we do it in the Islands and the South?
If you are having a drink on the beach, it will usually be either colorful, fruity or fun – sometimes creamy. Rockin some drinks in the South? I’m sure it will involve some Whiskey or Southern Comfort. Think dark liquors.
Today, we are starting off with a super colorful drink called the Caribbean Sunset. I know where I am having mine, where are you having yours?
This is a nice little drink but it does indeed pack a punch. The original version suggests using coconut rum which would give it a sweeter flavor to combat the acidity of the cranberry and orange juices. I do not have coconut rum, so I just used regular rum. It turned out just fine.
As far as layering goes, I decided to do more orange juice and do that first – for two reasons. One, I like the flavor when there is more orange juice than cranberry juice. Second, I think it layers better and it looks prettier.
Don’t forget to mix everything up before you drink it though or you will only get a mouth full of cranberry juice or if using a straw, a big swig of liquor.
Kitchen Notes:

- Use coconut rum (Malibu) for a sweeter drink.
Perfect tart and slightly sweet drink for watching that Caribbean sunset.
Ingredients
- 1.5 ounce rum
- 1.5 ounce Melon liqueur
- 3 ounce orange juice
- 1 ounce cranberry juice
Directions
- Mix the rum and the melon liqueur, and slowly pour the orange juice on top until it almost fills the glass. Carefully fill the remainder of the glass with cranberry juice, so it floats on top.

Ooooh! Pretty! Love rum drinks and this is beautiful!
This looks absolutely wonderful!! I would enjoy one of those with all this heat we’ve been having!
Oh, it’s so pretty! It always amazes me how people make layered drinks like this. Somehow I think I’d manage to mess it up and it would end up being an ugly shade of brown.
As far as layering goes, one word: slowly! Just think – higher density (heavier) on the bottom. I went through a few trials before I settled on the recipe. But, this drink does turn into one maroon glass when mixed!
