It is a good thing Heather picked out the first couple of dishes for this cookbook spotlight, because when week three rolled around (blogger choice) I had a hard time narrowing it down. Week one brought Austin Style Black Beans, week two was Poblano Mac and Cheese and Sopapillas (oh my!) and week three, for me, was Cheese Enchiladas with Chile Con Carne. I don’t think I even need to go on with a final review because obviously everything was fantastic. But, that’s the job (I know, tough right?) – so here is my final review. When I received the book, I was pleasantly surprised as I unwrapped it, because I had not seen any photos of it yet, so I did not know what to expect. It is a beautiful hard cover with wonderful pictures throughout. A fabulous introduction about Lisa’s life in New York and her love for Texas opens the first pages and the early chapter gives you a look into a Texan’s pantry with information about many peppers, herbs and some ingredients that may not be so familiar. Throughout the book, Lisa intrigues us with stories of the recipes and useful tips.
Of course, I could not stop at three recipes – but not because of my due diligence and my need to provide a great review, but because there were just so many dishes I wanted to make. I also had the pleasure of indulging in Fried Green Tomatoes with a Jalepeno Buttermilk Dressing and Avocado Soup. Now that my cookbook has been broken in and is dusted with cumin, I’ve got a great go-to cookbook for my Tex-Mex meals. Exactly what you would expect, with many dishes going above and beyond expectations. From Pickles and Preserves to Tex-Mex Classics you are sure to find something that wets your appetite. The Homesick Texan by Lisa Fain is now available, don’t hesitate to get your copy.
