It is definitely not hot chocolate weather right now – I would say that is true all across the country. With some places hitting 100 degree temperatures, hot chocolate is the last thing on our minds during this summertime heat. That’s why there is Frozen Hot Chocolate. Oh yeah, that’s right. Beat the heat and enjoy this (typically) wintertime treat.
Fairly simple to make if you get all of the pre-made stuff, but if you want to make it extra special and make sure it tastes good, you might have to put a little work into it. No Swiss Miss here people. Nothing against them, but quality is what makes this great. I adapted this recipe from Paula Deen, and if you perform a Google search, it’s most likely the first recipe you’ll find. She suggests you use Serendipity Frrrozen Hot Chocolate mix, as Serendipity 3, the New York Restaurant, is the place that inspires this fabulous drink. I make my own Hot Cocoa Mix, go ahead and make this ahead, it’s good to have it on hand anyways – and don’t forget to use good cocoa. I also make my own Whipped Cream. This way, I am rolling all natural and I know what’s in it every step of the way. But for a quick fix, you can always go with a store bought cocoa and Reddi whip.
Here’s what you’ll need:
Within about 10 minutes from now, you can enjoy your cold hot chocolate. Technically, it would just be a cold chocolate. Whetevs.
I actually found the original recipe lacking something, so I altered the amounts of chocolate mix and sugar. Still haven’t quite put my finger on it, but then again, I really don’t have anything to compare the finished product to – I have never had the original from Serendipity 3. Maybe I should try using their chocolate mix? Maybe next time. For now, this one is satisfying.
Ingredients
- 3 ounces best-quality chocolate (or a variety of your favorites)
- 2 Tablespoons store bought hot chocolate mix
- (recommended: Serendipity Frozen Hot Chocolate Mix) or Make Your Own
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 1/2 cups milk
- 3 cups crushed ice
- Whipped cream, for garnish
- Chocolate shavings, for garnish
- Dust with a little chocolate mix
Directions
- Chop the chocolate into small pieces and melt in a small heavy saucepan or in the top of a double boiler over simmering water. Stir occasionally until melted. Add the hot chocolate mix and sugar, stirring constantly until blended.
- Remove from heat and slowly add 1/2 cup of the milk, stirring until smooth. Cool to room temperature.
- In a blender, place the remaining 1 cup of milk, the chocolate mixture, and the ice. Blend on high speed until smooth and the consistency of a frozen daiquiri. Pour into a giant goblet and top with whipped cram and chocolate shavings.
